Visiting Severndale Academy
When visiting Severndale Academy, you will be given a copy of our "Safeguarding Information for Visitors" leaflet.
The pupils in this video explain why we would like to ask you to please read this information carefully:
At Severndale Academy, we have a whole-school commitment to listening to the views, wishes and experiences of all children and young people. We place huge value on what our children and young people communicate to trusted adults about their lives. We believe that all children and young people need to be provided with meaningful opportunities to share their experiences, views and hopes.
Talking Mats are a communication tool that use a mat, visual scale and images to discuss themes in a child or young person's life. At Severndale Academy, trusted adults use Talking Mats to help our children and young people see their personal strengths and abilities and reflect on what is important for them in their lives and what they would like to improve.
Another way we capture pupil voice at Severndale Academy is by using a tool called 'Three Houses'.
In the 'House of Worries', we encourage our children and young people to communicate anything that is worrying them. In the 'House of Good Things', our children and young people can communicate the things that they like and enjoy in their lives. In the 'House of Dreams', our children and young people can share their wishes for the future; this can include their short-term and long-term aspirations.
In this video, some pupils from our ‘Formal’ department explain their understanding of the ‘Three Houses’ tool:
Here are a few of the things our students have put on our Three Houses Display:
Where our children and young people have special interests, we can adapt the ‘Three Houses’ tool to reflect this; for example, 'Three Spatulas'. The 'House of Worries', 'House of Good Things' and 'House of Dreams' becomes the 'Spatula of Worries', 'Spatula or Good Things' and 'Spatula of Dreams'.
